'Festschrift' Honors Harold Johnston
From the ACS meeting Harold S. Johnston's work first drew wide attention 3 0 years ago when he alerted the public that exhaust from supersonic aircraft like the Concorde might damage the stratospheric ozone layer. So it was fitting that the kick-off talk in the Division of Physical Chemistry's 'festschrift" honoring the University of California, Berkeley, chemistry professor emeritus on his 80th birthday should focus on the latest assessment of the potential effects of a fleet of modern high-speed aircraft on the atmosphere. The multiday program focused on a broad range of topics in physical and atmospheric chemistry, as Johnston has done throughout his career.
"Hal, as much as anybody, has bridged the disciplines and brought the rigor of physical chemistry to atmospheric chemistry," said Stephen E. Schwartz of Brookhaven National Laboratory, a former graduate student of Johnston's. Schwartz organized the festivities with assistant professor of chemistry Charles E. Miller of Haverford College, Haverford, Pa., another Johnston student

Johnston (second from left), is pictured with three of the five Nobel Laureates in chemistry who spoke at the symposium: (from left) Paul J. Crutzen of Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany; Harvard University's Dudley Herschbach; and Mario J. Molina of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At a gala dinner, Herschbach announced that colleagues, friends, and former students are contributing funds to establish the Harold S. Johnston Lectureship at UC Berkeley—an annual l e c t u r e s h i p in physical or atmospheric chemistry to be inaugurated in the 2 0 0 0 - 0 1 academic year. And a special issue of the Journal of Physical Chemistry in honor of Johnston will feature many of the papers and posters p r e s e n t e d at the symposium. Pamela Zurer
