-*~ ness activity during 1954 is reflected in annual reports of m a n y chemical and allied firms. Perhaps t h e most severe drops were noted i n coke, metal, a n d r u b b e r sales. However t o w a r d t h e e n d of the year even these products seemed to b e stronger. Allied Chemical has confirmed its earlier estimates for 1 9 5 4 revenues. It says t h a t substantial reductions in
Sales of nitroparaffins continued brisk throughout t h e year. CSC's biochemical operations experienced price r e ductions resulting from competitive conditions which cut into over-all sales and profits, Industrial Rayon says t h a t considering the curtailment a n d distribution problems of t h e year, a n d t h e fact t h a t its over-all operating r a t e for t h e year was below 7 5 % , it feels t h e results of
sales of coke a n d volume of coke oven construction were partly offset by i n creased sales of plastics and resins from t h e Plaskon plants acquired late in 1 9 5 3 , sales of M u t u a l Chemical which were included in consolidated sales for t h e last six months of 1954, and b y sales of products for which increased capacity was available. Atlas P o w d e r ' s chemical sales h e l d u p very well, it says, i n spite of i n creased competition in 1954. I t says t h a t during 1954 its chemicals research staff brought t o the commercial stage a line of improved emulsifiers for food processors a n d several n e w surface active agents for t h e petroleum industry. Research is continuing o n other chemicals for petroleum production, and a number of new surfactants w i t h promising uses in t h e detergent field are in various phases of development. Commercial Solvents reports t h a t proportion of sales and earnings from petrochemical products continued t o increase throughout t h e year, reflecting full production from expanded nitrogen a n d methanol production facilities.
its operations were relatively favorable. After t h e textile slump of several years, November a n d December witnessed increased sales of textile rayon. I t says it thinks t h e corner is turned a n d that rayon will enjoy an improved market a t m o s p h e r e i n t h e period ahead. N a t i o n a l Distillers says t h e decrease in sales of 0 . 3 % w a s despite t h e fact that certain portions of its chemical business, which contributed a substantial volume of sales b u t only nominal profits in 1953, were disposed of i n 1954. N a t i o n a l Lead says t h e 4 % d r o p in dollar sales volume w a s caused primarily b y decreased activity in certain major industries served by it. H o w ever, t h e final q u a r t e r of 1954 a n d t h e first two months of 1955 show a d e cided u p t u r n . P i t t s b u r g h Coke & Chemical says most of its sales decline occurred in coke a n d p i g iron w h i c h were effected by the sharply curtailed operations of trie steel industry. T o w a r d t h e e n d of trie year, d e m a n d for these products improved markedly.

Versene Fe3 Specific is the most powerful chelating (complexing) agent k n o w n for ferric iron. Until it was developed, ferric iron could not be efficiently complexed throughout the pH range. Versene Fe3 Specific is stable toward heat, acids, alkalis and aging. I t decomposes only in the pres ence of strong oxidizing agents such as permanganate a n d hot acid dichromate. This chemical stability permits the use of Versene Fe3 Specific in a wide variety of products and proc esses. Versene Fe3 Specific is made only under patents owned and operated by Versenes Incorporated. Quality is unduplicated and uniformity of com plexing power is guaranteed.
