A recording spectrophotometer and a beta-ray thickness gage were dis played and operated in General Elec t r i c s exhibit at the 28th national con vention of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists held at Chalfonte-Haddon H a l l , Atlantic City, Oct. 13 to 15. A new a u t o m a t i c t r i •stimulus integrator was shown with t h e spectrophotometer. T h e beta-ray thickness gage was set up at t h e show so that a strip of «doth ran through its gaging head con tinuously. Without contacting t h e m a terial, t h e instrument measured its thickU.L:S> and indicated it on an eniamed scale.

Increased Production of A Iky I Amines An enlargement of its production fa cilities for alkyl amines has been com pleted b y Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corp.. it has been announced. Initial production of three ethyl amines—monoethyl, diethyl, and triethyl amines—and diisopropyl amine has already been m a d e . At the same time, larger q u a n t i ties of the other alkyl amines produced b y Carbide will soon be available. T h e hitter include m o n o - and d i ( n - b u t y l ) amines, mono- and di(^-ethylhexyl) amines, and monoisopropyl amine. T h i s new production is expected to increase the supply of the lower alkyl a m i n e s for solubilizing the weed killer 2,4-D. I n addition, several of the alkyl amines are raw materials for further synthesis b y Carbide of their nitrogen compounds. One of these, diethylethanolamine, will b e available in greatly increased q u a n t i t i e s for t h e p h a r m a c e u tical, textile, a n d polish manufacturing induslHes. Diethyl»mine, as well as t h e n - b u t y i , 2-ethylhexyl, «nd monoisopropyl a m i n e s are immediately available in t a n k car quantities. P r o d u c t i o n of t h e o t h e r
