Other possibilities that the Task Force on Futures has been looking at are numeric databases, databases on chemical hazards, expanded chemical-business-oriented databases, new databases that integrate data from several organizations, capture of information in the CAS database directly from primary publications —both journals and patents—and soft-

ware to support experimental design, automated data analysis, and specialized computations. Indeed, we have taken the preliminary steps to assure that ACS will continue to have the world's foremost secondary information service in CAS. Clearly, information delivery will become increasingly competitive in the years ahead. Maintain-

ing the society's leadership position will require constant innovation, excellence in management, and substantial financial investment in new technology. ACS recognizes that it will succeed in this, as in its other activities, only if it is willing to innovate in areas of user need and to make the required investment in the future. That is our direction for the 1990s. •

First Group of 1986 ACS PRF Grants Approved At its December meeting the ACS Board of Directors approved 143 new or continuing ACS-PRF grants for fundamental research, plus 70 supplements to existing grants for Summer Research Fellowships to benefit faculty or students from four-year colleges. These grants, committing $3,949,267 of the $11.3 million authorized for 1986, were recommended from the 521 proposals considered by the PRF Advisory Board in November of 1985. The last meeting of the PRF Advisory Board to recommend 1986 grants is scheduled for May. Proposals for this meeting will be accepted at least through January. Information and application materials may be obtained from the Petroleum Research Fund, American Chemical Society, 1155—16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036, or by calling (202) 872-4481.
