New Books Laboratory Experiments in Organic Chemistry, 6th Ed. Roger Adams, John R. Johnson, and Charles F. Wil cox, Jr. xvi + 528 pages. Macmillan Co., 866 Third Ave., New York, Ν. Υ. 10022. 1970. $8.95

This laboratory manual is intended for beginning students in organic chem istry who may be specializing in chem istry and chemical engineering, or studying the subject because of its re lationship to engineering, medicine, food science, biology, agriculture, the graphic arts, and other fields. This book is divided into three major areas: exercises on separation and purifica tion, identification of organic com pounds, and the preparation and re actions of typical organic compounds. In this edition the manual directions for assembling equipment have been modified to allow for use of either standard taper ground glass apparatus or conventional glassware with corks or rubber stoppers. Some changes have been made in the organization of the subject matter, and new material on spectroscopic and chromatographic methods has been added. The section on "Literature of Organic Chemistry"

and on using Beilstein's "Handbuch" and the indexes of "Chemical Ab stracts" have been enlarged and im proved. Marine Chemistry, Vol. 2: Theory and Applications. Dean F. Martin, xi + 451 pages. Marcel Dekker, Inc., 95 Madison Ave., New York, Ν. Υ. 10016. 1970. $9.50

This volume provides an integrated view of the facts, theory, implications, and applications of marine chemistry. Considerable emphasis is placed on the interactions of organisms, chemicals, and environment. Biogeochemical cy cles of the sea are stressed, together with the significance of these cycles in regulating such diverse quantities as the supply of minerals, marine food, and composition of the atmosphere. There are 11 chapters, and some of the topics presented include: mixing pro cesses in the marine environment, en ergy ûow in the marine ecosystem, organic productivity, and resources of the sea. Both volumes contain indispensable information for chemists, oceanographers, technicians, biologists,

One of the primary purposes of this annual is to provide the most information concerning detergents and emulsifiers in the least amount of space, and in the most convenient form. This issue contains a few revisions started in the 1969 edition, such as separating materials on which the supplier would not divulge information from materials on which the supplier has divulged more complete information. Biodegradability as a specific characteristic has been eliminated, since there is no recognized standard for this property. The table of contents lists the following entries: index of chemicals by classification, companies and their products, listings of detergents and emulsifiers, compounds, intermediates, surfactant materials from Japan, as well as an advertisers' index.
