News For Your Information A proposed position paper on SI quantities and units is now available from the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). The paper outlines the development and implementation of the SI system for the U.S., and is being recommended for review by the clinical laboratory and medical community, whose members are encouraged to comment through a consensus process. Copies of the paper, called "Proposed Position Paper PPC-11—Quantities and Units SI", are available at $9.00 per copy plus $1.00 additional per copy for out-of-U.S. orders. The National Science Foundation has released a booklet entitled "Projections of Science and Engineering Doctorate Supply and Utilization, 1982 and 1987." The booklet includes information relating to the projected supply of science and engineering doctorates, the utilization of these scientists and engineers in 1977, and projections of their utilization in 1982 and 1987. The balance between supply and demand is projected for those years, and a summary of projection methods and assumptions is given. A Dispense Systems Planning Department has been announced by Tridak Division of Indicon, Inc. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Commission for Analytical Radiochemistry and Nuclear Materials has examined the data available on Bowen's Kale, and is recommending its use as a reference material for radioanalytical investigations of biological samples. These recommendations have been published in the May 1979 issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry (Vol. 51, No. 5, pp 1183-93). Nucleopore Corp. has acquired the Johns-Manville scientific products business. This J-M business operation manufactures a line of cellulosic membrane filters, filter holders, and accessories sold under the tradename "Membra-Fil." For further information contact H. W. The National Science Foundation's annual report for 1978, including a statement titled "Science: New Pathways and New Promises" by NSF director Richard C. In his statement, Dr. Atkinson discusses the importance of basic research, new instrumentation efforts, and the need for continued education programs for the country's cadre of scientists and engineers.
