Books matography. Derivatization reactions can be used either pre- or post-chromatography to improve sample detection. For example, the post-column ninhydrin reaction with amino acids enhances detector sensitivity and provides some detection selectivity. In addition, derivatizations can occur prior to sample injection or on-column (e.g., ion-paired chromatography) to improve the resolution of sample components by changing the chromatographic properties of those components. In laying the groundwork for chemical derivatization in liquid chromatography, the authors provide a brief outline of basic chromatographic principles and refer the interested reader to more complete texts on this subject. A brief discussion of the more useful means of detection in LC is also presented as background material. Also included is a very useful chapter on the available TLC and HPLC equipment and accessories, complete with photographic illustrations. This background material accounts for nearly 50% of the text. The remaining 50% concerns the derivatiza-

tion procedures for the liquid chromatography of such sample types as drugs and other pharmaceutical compounds, pesticides, pollutants, metals, and compounds of biological interest such as amino acids and estrogens. The common factors among these compound types are that they are non-UV-absorbing materials and usually must be detected in small quantities. Each compound type is represented by several example applications taken from the literature which specify the derivatization and chromatographic conditions used for each analysis. Also, for most examples, the resulting LC separation is shown in a figure. This approach is highly effective in communicating the utility of derivatization techniques for modern liquid chromatography, and it provides the reader with guidance in solving similar analytical problems. This text is well written, well organized, and contains listings of references to the literature of chemical derivatization procedures. This book would be a valuable aid when one is confronted with an analysis that requires a derivatization approach.

High Resolution NMR Spectroscopy in Solids. M. Mehring. xi + 246 pages. Springer-Verlag New York Inc., 175 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10010. 1976. $27.90

Reviewed by Paul D. Ellis, Department of Chemistry, University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C. 29208 This book represents a tribute to the experimental genius of J. S. Waugh and his coworkers. The author presents a concise summary of the entire field of "High Resolution NMR Spectroscopy in Solids" through the 1976 literature. The topics covered within the text are: Nuclear Spin Interactions in Solids, Multiple Pulse Experiments, Double Resonance Experiments, Magnetic Shielding Tensor, Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Line Narrowing Experiments, and several detailed appendices. Although the book is intended for the more advanced student, the novice will benefit from the clear exposition of the transformation properties of the shielding tensor presented in Chapter 2. Further, NMR spectroscopists with interest in liquids will also be attract-

THE MOST DEPENDABLE PART OF OUR RADIATION DETECTOR IS MADE OF PAPER. Our warranty. Which guarantees for one full year the reliability of the Channeltron® 4700 and 4800 Series continuous dynode electron multipliers. One full year. No other maker of radiation detectors would dare make that claim. Their products simply go down too fast. And too often. Galileo's Channeltron 4700 and 4800 Series are more dependable because we gave them a stable dynode surface that can be exposed to air under normal use without degrading. That means more up time for your experiments. And less frustration. What's more, we can deliver our Channeltrons fast. In fact, they're on the shelf now, waiting for your order. For more information about the Channeltron 4700 and 4800 Series, Channeltron electron multiplier arrays, custom assemblies with associated electronics, or our warranty, write Galileo Electro-Optics Corporation, Galileo Park, Sturbridge, MA 01518.
