About Book & Media Reviews Edward J. Walsh Department of Chemistry, Allegheny College Meadville, PA 16335-3902 Phone: 814/332-5359; Fax: 814/332-2789 Email: [email protected] The book review (now the book and media review) section has always been an integral part of the Journal. I can’t think of another periodical in chemistry where that is as true as it is here. The Journal plans to devote more resources to this section and I am delighted to have the opportunity to help to continue its long-standing tradition. We promise to bring you timely, informative, substantive information on the materials available to teachers of chemistry and the areas informed by chemistry. Our first priority will be texts and supportive materials directly applicable to the classroom and laboratory. But we will also report on a wide range of books and materials: books that reveal the important uses of chemistry and help us see our science in a broader intellectual context and works that help us explain some of the wonder and power of chemistry. Whenever possible we plan to offer concurrently reviews of a group of books or media that serve similar interests so that comparisons can be conveniently made. User feedback will also be published.

Some of our reports will be in the vein of minireviews or books noted. Occasionally, there will be a short column with more personal reactions to new materials, or materials that have been out for a while. These will be written by any of the editors of this section but also by guests from the readership who would like to share their points of view. Our service to the readers of the Journal is, of course, predicated upon the support of these readers. We will need a sizable group of conscientious and knowledgeable reviewers as well as an ongoing dialog with our readers. We invite letters to the Review Editors as a regular feature in the review section. Those who would like to communicate less formally will find my addresses above. We will soon announce a small group of Associate Editors for this section with whom you will also be able to communicate. We will look forward to hearing from you. In fact, we will be counting on it. If you would like to be a book or media reviewer and can arrange the time to do it please send me information about yourself and what materials you would like to review for the Journal. If you have a point of view to share about materials published that continue to be indispensable in your teaching, send it to me. Has the Journal missed an important release or publication? Write me and tell us about it.
