NBS to Develop SRMs for Testing Instruments The National Bureau of Standards is developing a new class of Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) aimed at ensuring private and government laboratories that the analytical instruments they buy meet proper specifications. The first of the new reference materials, designed for checking the performance of gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers, is slated for release by this summer. According to Harry Hertz, head of the NBS Center for Analytical Chemistry, NBS's goal in developing these materials is to improve the reliability of measurements made in testing analytical instrumentation while easing the burden on equipment manufacturers who now must produce their own testing samples. Instrument manufacturers have had

to make up their own performance evaluation samples to verify that newly installed equipment meets sensitivity specifications. These companies will be able to buy samples in bulk directly from NBS, which will recover its expenses from the SRM sales. NBS chose mass spectrometry as a trial area for the new SRMs because there are only a handful of mass spectrometer manufacturers, and most use the same testing compounds, making it an ideal test case for the new NBS materials. Every unit of the Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer Performance SRMs will contain four vials: two certified concentrations each— 1 ng/mL and 5 ng/mL—of methyl stéarate and benzophenone. The lower concentration is for performing sensitivity checks, while the higher is for tuning checks and for locking on signals. Methyl stéarate is used for testing electron impact mass spectrometry, while benzophenone is for chemical ionization mass spectrometry. If the reference materials are well received, NBS may produce similar SRMs for gas chromatographs, liquid chromatographs, and other analytical equipment.

Nominations Sought for ICTA Awards The International Confederation for Thermal Analysis (ICTA) is soliciting nominations for two awards to be presented at the 8th ICTA meeting in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, Aug. 19-23, 1985. • The DuPont Award is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the science of thermal analysis or who has shown significant leadership in and has made an outstanding contribution to the profession of thermal analysis. The award consists of a plaque, an honorarium of $1000, and expenses to attend the ICTA meeting. • A new ICTA award had been established to encourage young scientists to become involved in thermal analysis and to provide them the opportunity to participate in ICTA by presenting results of their relevant work. The award consists of a plaque and financial support to attend the ICTA meeting. Candidates must be less than 35 years old as of Dec. 31, 1985. Supporting documents must include the paper (in English) the nomiLEDs show oscillation rate and °C direct. No waiting, no average. Model 25 shaker bath, 37°C±0.05°C uniformity.
