Lignite low temperature tar is a relatively new and unknown raw material. To determine its potential value, a cooperative research program was started by 13 companies in 1954 at the Battelle Memorial Institute. One of the important developments has been a solvent extraction process . . . a countercurrent extraction of this tar with 75% methanol—25% water and commercial hexane .. . using the RDC column.
