ABSTRACT: Starting from a microscopic description for interacting chains, generalized Rouse equations for the motion of segments of a test chain are derived. The effects of interaction of other chains on the test chain are present in the form of a dynamic friction function A{(t). The translationalinvariance of the interaction law against curvilinear displacements is used to factorize the time evolution of A{(t) in terms of lateral and curvilinear motion of the chains. In a self-consistentway it is shown that lateral motion freezes in at a critical chain length. This is interpreted as a reptation transition and holds for 7l
