Give Your ACS Author Rewards a Try: Make Your Paper Open Access

cap and wear my author hat; while wearing said author hat, I must admit being slightly daunted by the apparent complexity of the Author Rewards,1 which can be used to make your article open access, often free of charge. I discovered that my sense of the system being complicated was wrong, as I found that using Author Rewards was easy, fast, and satisfying in an unexpected way. Each time you published a paper with ACS in 2014 as the primary corresponding author, you received an email telling you about credits you could use for making a future paper open access; you received 2 credits (worth $750 each) for each published article. Even if you ignored those emails, or they ended up in your spam filter, your account in ACS ChemWorx is keeping track. Wearing both my author and editor hats, I encourage you to give your Author Rewards a try. Here I outline the steps for locating and starting the process for using your Author Rewards, as described by me, as an author. Just follow the steps from 1 to 6 (outlined with screen shots in Figure 1) and learn a bit about ACS ChemWorx along the way: 1, 2. Find the ACS ChemWorx site by either searching for ACS ChemWorx in a search engine or by going to this URL: https://hp.acschemworx.acs.org. You will need your ACS ID to log into ACS Chemworx to download your proofs. 3. Once in ACS ChemWorx, you should land on the Publishing Center. (If you are not in the Publishing Center, please click the icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen that looks like a printed page with a folded corner.) 4. In case you were not aware, you can use ACS ChemWorx to check the download statistics of any paper published in an ACS journal. You can also see the breakdown by country. 5. Scroll down the Publishing Center page, and you will see a section called ACS Author Rewards. It is here that you will find the number, and codes, of your ACS rewards/ credits that you can use toward purchasing open access. 6. Underneath the ACS Author Rewards is a section called ACS AuthorChoice. It is here that you choose the manuscript for which you wish to consider purchasing open access. In my own personal experience, in the past 6 months I have used Author Rewards to make 2 papers open access; through the use of Author Rewards and my ACS membership, I did so at no cost. The first time I went through the process, it took me about 5 minutes, while the second time I ran through this, it took me about 2 minutes to make an article open access. Give it a try for your next article in Chemistry of Materials, and keep an eye on the download statistics through ACS ChemWorx. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.
