The Gmelin Instit,ut,ehas now expanded the 8th edition of its handbook to include vanadium, niobium, and tantalum, system numbem 48, 49 and 50. These volumes will all appear soon and will be divided int,o two parts. P a r t A will contain histo~y,preparation, physical properties, and chemical reactions of the element. Part B, in as many sect.ion as necessary, will deal with the compounds. This sect, ion on vanadium covers the compounds through bismuth, by the Gmelin system. The first comprehensive desrnipt, ion of the V-H system is included and the chapter on oxides discusses many compounds from VOosa to t,he most important V& Vctnadium acids, aqueous solnt, ians, halogenidm, and systems containing 5, So and Te are also thorooghly daeimented. Part B will be concluded in section 2 which will cover alloys, the compounds through lead, by the Gmelin system, snd the coordination compoimds.

Gmelin's treatment o.* carbon as sn inorganic element is now undergoing a complete revision. Volume B-1 contains data on carbon isotopes, the atom, the molecule and physical properties of diamond. The literature search has been completed through 1963 with some references as recent as 1066. Sect, ion B-2 which will appear early in 1968, will deal with ~ r a p h i t eand colloidal forms of carbon
