dustrial firms. For some of the sub jects, however, the authors were chosen from among specialists who work in fields other than textiles. This is true, for example, of the contributors on the subjects of electron and optical micros copy. Details and illustrations of some of the test methods were taken from British Standards Handbook No. 11 and from AST M Standards on textile materials. Advances in Spectroscopy, V o l . 1 .

H. W. Thompson, Editor, ix + 363 pages. Interscience Publishers, Inc., 250 Fifth Ave., New York 1, Ν. Ύ. 1959. $12.50. This volume is the first in a series intended to cover all important aspects of spectroscopy in the form of periodic authoritative surveys. As such, it deals with recent advances in the vari ous topics discussed. The book, to which contributions were made by various authors, is divided into eight sections: the spectra of polyatomic free radicals; spectroscopy in the vac uum ultraviolet; the index of refrac tion of air; determination of the velocity of light; high resolution Ra man spectroscopy ; modern infrared de tectors; the infrared spectra of poly mers; and rotational isomerism about C—C bonds in saturated molecules as studied by vibrational spectroscopy. Each section is concluded with an ex tensive list of references. Index of Crystallographic Supplies.

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

2nd ed. A. J. Rose, Editor, xxvi + 126 pages. Société française de Minéralogie et de Cristallographie (I. U. Cr.) 1, rue Victor-Cousin, Paris 5ème, France. 1959. No charge for single copy. The first edition of this series was entitled "Index of Manufacturers of Apparatus and Materials Used in Crystallography," and was published in 1956. The publication of revised editions is a continuing project of the Commission on Crystallographic Apparatus of the International Union of Crystallography. The information contained in the book, compiled from manufacturers' catalogs, is limited to items that are commercially available. Items such as chemicals and electronic and mechanical equipment have been omitted due to the prohibitive cost and time needed for preparation of such a list. Copies of the book are being distributed free of charge to crystallographers throughout the world through the national secretaries of those nations adhering to IUC. Additional copies are also available at a nominal cost.
