Heat Transfer Listing covers the year’s references of greatest utility to the chemical process industry

he eleventh National Heat Transfer Conference was held in T Minneapolis, Minn., in August 1969. Approximately 107 papers were presented. Topics included were Heat Pipes, TwoPhase Flow, Two-Phase Instrumentation, Transient Heat Transfer in Nuclear Reactors, and Process Heat Transfer. Thirteen papers were presented on the heat pipe, indicating a considerable interest in this device. The Fourth International Heat Transfer Conference will be held in Versailles, August 31 to September 5, 1970. Plans for the conference are well underway and it promises to be an excellent one. There will be no national conference in the United States in 1970. This review covers the year preceding April 1969.

Fundamental approaches to boundary layer solutions under broadening and more realistic conditions are widespread. The trend of increasing studies of non-Newtonian fluids noted in recent years is maintained. Laminar flow. The past year marked a return to concentration on the ideal form of a slim infinite flat plate. Table I11 lists configurational studies and indicates the preponderance of work in this context. Continued interest is noted in refiningour knowledge of the dynamic formation of the boundary layer (860) and the similar situation in the entrance region (590, 670, 730, 790). The interplay of free and forced convection is examined carefully in two studies (69D, 780), the former for non-Newtonian fluids.

Thermal Properlies and Measurements

Most of the papers listed in the bibliography are classified in Table I. Some further references and methods of measuring thermal conductivity are included under the category of conduction heat transfer.

Papers listed in the bibliography are classified in Table 11. This year, there appears to be an increase in interest in research on heat exchangers.

Conduction Heal Transfer

Several papers were published on the basic theory of heat conduction. An experimental study of the validity of Fourier’s law was reported (8C). Results were inclusive but Fourier’s law still appears to be valid. Two new theorems on heat conduction were presented in a short communication (76C). The results of a number of investigations on thermal contact Many resistance were reported (6C, 74C, 27C, 29C, 30-32‘2). classical problems in heat conduction were treated and include several discussions on methods of solution (ZC,4C, 70C,I l C , 73C, 75C, 77C, 78C, 20C, 26C, 27C, 35C, 36C). Some nonlinearities in the heat conduction problem were discussed (5C, 7C, 79C,37C). Heat conduction in gases, gas mixtures, and liquids was also studied (9’2, 72C,24C). Convection

Continued high level work in all areas of convection has been observed. The percentage of noteworthy papers has remained very high. A shift i n concentration is apparent with the area of natural convection and combined natural and forced convection sustaining the high interest first noted last year. Many more papers have been published this year in the experimental areas of extended surface heat transfer. This work concentrating on fins
