Hemoglobin: A Series of Biochemistry Experiments A recent contribution to this Journal' reported an experiment involving the isolation and spectral analysis of hemoglobin. We have found that hemoglobin is also well-suited for a variety of other biochemistry experiments on the undergraduate level. A series of these has been employed to introduce students to the chemistry of proteins and a t the same time to a wide range of new techniques and instrumentation. Laboratory Experiments 1) Venipuncture. Hemolysis of red blood cells 2) Determination of hemoglobin concentration 3) Spectral analysis of hemoglobin 4) Ion exchange chromatography 5) Electrophoretic separation of hemoglobins 6) Paper chromatography of an acid hydrolysate of plasma and of hemoglobin 7) Tryptic digestion of hemoglobins 8) End group analysis
