The purpose of the symposium was to bring together research workers involved in spectroscopic and electrochemical studies in the three major classes of nonaqueous solvents: organic solvents, covalent inorganic solvents, and molten salts. The first section on thermal and chemical testing is further divided into two chapters that deal with surface flammability measurements for building materials and related products, and radiation resistance, respectively. Section 2 on the evaluation of surface properties consists of three chapters entitled: optical methods for directional reflectance, surface properties for the examination and characterization of phase interfaces, and adhesive properties. Section 3 on the evaluation of particle properties is divided into particle size measurement, surface area measurement, and pore size and volume measurement. The last and the longest section covers mechanical and electrical testing. The topics of six chapters of this section are: evaluation of time-dependent mechanical properties, fatigue testing, quasistatic strength, mechanical damping, rheological properties of fluids, and analytical applications of electrical resistivity measurements on polymers.
