F-C Glasteel Pipe (glass inside, steel outside) can b e field cut to required lengths, is lined ^vith 1 / s in.-thick horosilicate glass. Developed by Pfaudler Co., division of Pfaudler Permutit, Rochester, N.Y., the glass-lined pipe was shown last week at the 1959 Chem Show in New York. I t can he installed in four steps, according t o Pfaudler. First, you cut the pipe to length using conventional equipment (as demonstrated by the workman above). T h e n you thread it, fire polish t h e end for a smooth surface after cutting, and finish the end with a belt seinder for a flat gasket seat a n d seal-tight flange connection. Rated at 165 p.s.i., line pipe is available in IVo-, 2-, and 3-in. diameters, Pfaudler says. Ε1

High-Nickel Steels Coming International Nickel has confirmed rumors that it is researching high-nickel steels. It has applied for patent protec tion on a family of alloys containing from 2 0 t o 3 0 C/O nickel plus small amounts of aluminum and titanium. Main advantages of the alloys, ac cording to Inco: They have high ten sile a n d yield strengths, can he heat treated and formed easily. By con trolling the amounts of aluminum and titanium added, they can get specific physical properties. Varying the nickel content from as Ixigh a s 30% down to 2 0 % or lower also affects the physical properties of t h e steels. Optimum combination for strength and ductility: about 2 5 % znickel, 2 t o 6 % titanium a n d / o r aluiminunx, carbon below 0 . 0 5 % , silicon a n d manganese normal, a n d the bal

ance iron. Nickel steels of this com bination may find use in aircraft and missiles and in making high strength, wear resisting precision parts such as hearings, Inco acids. Steels of this composition have an other advantage—they can be welded in the hardened condition without pre heat. This feature, plus high strength properties, coulcl lead to their use in heavy wall pressure vessels and in heavy defense equipment. So far, Ineo has made no commercial melts of these alloys. L a b tests, how ever, show that yield strengths higher than 250,000 p.s.i., elongations of 6 to 109c, and reductions of area of more than 2 0 % can be expected. However, since the alloys d o not contain chro mium, they are not similar to stainless steels in corrosion resistance. Inco is n o w negotiating with steel companies to produce the new alloys.
