The structure of homogeneous binary SiO2-Al2O3 glasses with 0.4 to up to 12.0 wt % Al2O3 have been studied using high-resolution 27Al, 17O, and 29Si NMR spectroscopic techniques. All glasses are found to contain a mixture of 4-, 5-, and 6-fold coordinated Al sites (AlIV, AlV, and AlVI). The relative proportions of these sites are strongly dependent on composition with AlIV (AlV) being most dominant in glasses with
