HIGHLIGHTS
The first regional conference for local section officers will be held on Jan. 22-24 at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, Monterey, Calif. Twenty-one local sections from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington will be represented. Among the topics to be discussed by the participants are the role of the local section in continuing education programs, member participation and stimulation of younger members, section meeting format, topical groups and subsections, and the importance of a section's public and member image. Special emphasis will be given to a discussion of local section problems. Dr. Leonard V. Sorg, chairman of the Council Committee on Local Section Activities, will preside over the three-day session and will be assisted by other members of the committee and ACS staff personnel. Two other regional meetings are scheduled for later this year. A short course in one of the new fields of chemistry will be offered in conjunction with the 149th ACS National Meeting in Detroit in April as part of an experimental ACS program to improve opportunities for continuing education in chemistry. The course will be presented either just prior to the meeting or on its last three days. Although the exact nature of the course has not been decided, it is expected to be one which will cut across disciplinary Unes. Arrangements have been made with a local university for facilities for any laboratory work involved. A series of safety posters, suitable for use in high school and college chemistry laboratories, has been developed by the Manufacturing Chemists' Association in cooperation with the ACS through the Society's Committee on Chemical Safety. There are 12 posters in the group with safety tips on such topics as generating a gas, cutting glass tubing, using mercury, pouring reagents, and filling pipettes. Samples sets will be distributed early this year to all ACS local sections for possible use in local safety programs. Meanwhile, sets can be purchased for $2.00 each from the Manufacturing Chemists' Association, 1825 Connecticut Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009.

An educational exhibit program for the ACS headquarters building lobby was approved by the Society's Board of Directors last month. Aimed primarily at the high school age group, a continuing series of exhibits is planned to illustrate significant contributions of chemical research and technology and to suggest to young people the career opportunities in chemical science, according to Dr. Lawrence T. Eby, chairman of the exhibits subcommittee of the Board Committee on Public, Professional, and Member Relations. Several chemical companies have agreed to supply on loan tasteful, noncommercial displays and others will be invited to do so. When appropriate, the exhibits also will be shown in the new Chemical Abstracts Service building in Columbus, Ohio. JAN.
