NEW PRODUCTS Power Supplies A transistorized line of modular power supplies features 10 jusec. response time for outputs to 10 amp. d.c. These operate on 105 to 125 volts a.c. input and have line regulation of 0.01%, load regulation of 0.02%, and a 24-hour stability better than 2 mv. Company says ripple is less than 1 mv. r.m.s. Linear x-ray diffractometer, manufactured by Hilger and Watts, provides automatic measurement of x-ray reflections from single crystals recorded in logical order on reciprocal lattice lines. After recording, one adjustment sets the instrument for the next level. Two types of readout are incorporated. Output of the high sensitivity radiation detector-proportional or scintillation counter-can be fed into a recording rate of current meter or into a printing scaler.

Solid State Radiation Detector Large area solid state detectors with high reverse bias rating have been developed. They are of the silicon surface barrier type usable at over 500 volts reverse bias The 2.2 cm.2 surface area detectors (Type A) have resolutions below 30 kev. and the 0.1 cm.2 area (Type B) below 20 kev. Conversion films, such as Li 6 F, are available for neutron detection. Molechem. 420

Motors are used to set crystal and counter to each reflection point in turn. The intensity of a Bragg reflector and neighboring background are measured on a printing scaler which is provided with a plain figure and a punched-paper tape output. Three to four reflections per minute with an accuracy of 2—3% is generally possible in the point-by-point mode of operation. Scanning method is less accurate but speedier. Engis Equipment Co. Transistorized Scaler, Model 71208, counts up to 12,000 incidents per minute and will register up to 100,000 counts on a four digit binary bulb readout. It can be connected to a standard oscilloscope for visual observation of count frequency. An interval timer may also be used. Internal circuits include the protection afforded by a Zener diode voltage regulator and a detector tube current limiting network. Central Scientific Co. 421
