An empirical a n d practical a p proach has characterized nearly all of the test programs carried out to d a t e with the Doyle scrubber. Development work has, in the main, been d o n e to determine the feasibility of wet collection on specific jobs and to obtain design d a t a for full scale installations. Power requirements of the scrubber give positive advantages in higher recoveries a n d a compact u n i t with m i n i m u m space requirements. T h e more difficult cleaning operations require more energy. T h e Doyle scrubber, a device which applies m a n y of the fundamental principles of wet collection in a compact a n d simple m a n n e r , possibly will complement its success as a practical a n d highly efficient scrubber by proving to be a new and useful a p p a r a t u s for basic studies of the mechanisms of wet-particle collection a n d of gas-liquid contact.

rated at 64,000 cubic feet per minute, is m a d e u p of eight scrubber units— two-stage or series scrubbers arranged as four pairs in parallel. T h e space requirements m a y be j u d g e d from a typical scrubber, say, one of 13,000-cubic-feet-per-minute capacity. T h e approximate dimensions of such a unit, expressed as length X width X height (from base to tank top) would be 10 X 6 X 11.5 feet. T h e simple shape of the scrubber permits préfabrication or field fabrication a n d erection with a wide choice of materials of construction. I n addition to standard scrubbers fabricated from mild steel and stainless steels, m a n y installations have been completed using lead sheet supported on a welded steel framework, rybber-covered mild steel (including nozzle), acid-resisting brick and stainless steel nozzle, a n d wood with stainless steel or lead nozzle.
