EXCAVATE LARGEST ROCKET SILO This blast started a hole at Arnold Engineering Development Center, Tullahoma, Tenn., that is now 250 ft. deep. Part of a concrete cell in which huge liquid and solid-propellant rocket engines will be tested, simulating conditions at altitudes higherthan 5 miles, this excavation used 100,000 lbs. of Gelamite® dynamite. To avoid shock damage to extremely sensitive rocket-testing equipment nearby, firing was done with 10,000 shortperiod delay blasting caps. Prime contractor for this important assignment was Blount Brothers' Corporation, Montgomery, Ala.
