Hydrogen Bond, allegedly responsible for the gelling of solutions of proteins at low to moderate temperatures, Readily broken by such agents as urea and other peptizing agents to render the gel fluid. Carboxyl Groups, primarily due to aspartic '. and glutamic acid segments. Will react with . bases and form insoluble salts with poly valent heavy metal ions such as Fe+++ or À/+++. ^

Hydroxy I Groups, which arise from serine, threonine, and hydroxyproline residues may be alkylated or acylated.

. Primary Amine Groups, due to lysine will react with acids and also form complexes with certain salts, eg. Cu++ as well as yield to alkyfation and acylation.

Secondary Amine Groups, from proline and, hydroxyproline like primary amine groups may be alkylated, condensed with aldehydes, or acylated.

H o w many ways can you use the key chemical and physical characteristics of Swift's Technical Protein Colloids Swift's Technical Protein Colloids are highly refined collagen extracts. They are amphoteric with an isoelectric point of approximately 5.0, and molecular weights ranging upwards from 10,000-available in dry, semisolid, and liquid form. These colloids are insoluble in all solvents except water and certain polar solvents containing water (glycerol glycols, dimethyl formamide, etc.). They are unique in many respects including their exceptional homogeneity, which is far greater than that of the so-called "natural" products on the market. MULTIPURPOSE -Swift's TPC's can perform a variety of physical and chemical functions simultaneously. They can thereby impart additional values to products or processes, or eliminate the necessity for additives. ECONOMICAL-Swift's TPC's are priced lower than many other products offered to perform similar functions. Their refinement likewise assures that you get more for your money. VERSATILE —Since these colloids are amphoteric, they can function as an acid, base, or neutral substance. They can operate as buffers, capable of neutralizing, within limits, both acids and bases, acting to maintain the original pH of solutions. HIGHLY UNIFORM-Each grade is classified with high standards of uniformity insuring controlled, repeatable process performance superior to that obtainable with typical blends. EASILY CONTROLLABLE -These protein colloids will function as flocculants without the highly specialized control that is required by some higher priced products. FASTER ACTING -Reaction time in flocculation and dispersion applications is significantly faster than withsimilar products of lower molecular weight. ADAPTABLE-Swift's TPC's will flocculate effectively in both still and agitated solutions, unlike many competitive products which do not have this dual capability. They are likewise adaptable to a broader range of pH, as compared to some lower priced flocculants . . . and provide chelating action that improves and accelerates many clarification processes.

KEY FUNCTIONS OF SWIFT'S TECHNICAL PROTEIN COLLOIDS 7, FLOCCULATION— embracing clarification, settling, ore dressing, and recovery. 2* DISPERSION—includes dispersion and emulsification of solids and liquids along with its functioning as a protective colloid. 3.

PROTECTIVE COAT/NG-insoluble in oils, greases, and ordinary anhydrous solvents; can be made insoluble in water by reacting with aldehydes.

stiffen, 5. SIZING-to strengthen, fill, lubricate, and protect a broad range of fibers and particulate compositions. 6. AIR ENTRAINING-with controllable foaming characteristics, uniform air bubbles, and self-forming structure. 7. RA W MATERIALS-for an unlimited and as yet barely explored range of protein derivatives, new co mρ ο un ds, and new uses. For example. Swift's TPC's can be hydrolyzed to yield mixed amino acids. They can also function as scavenging agents for aldehydes or heavy metal salts.
