How t o speed your p r o g r e s s from r e s e a r c h through p r o d u c t i o n with economical and e f f i c i e n t DMF or DMAC as r e a c t i o n s o l v e n t s . Du Pont dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethylacetamide (DMAC) have the unique ability to dissolve virtually any_ organic and many inorganics. This powerful solvent action permits an extremely wide variety of reactions to take place· One example of this is;

In addition, when DMF is used as a solvent for reacting alkyl halides and alkali nitrite, the re action is so fast that certain side reactions are minimized. In many reactions DMF and DMAC also display a catalytic effect. Good examples of this are the preparation of phthalic acid de rivatives, isocyanates from metal halides, and quaternary compounds. In a reaction involving phthalimide, for instance DMF gives yields almost double those obtained with other solvents. In many cases, DMF and DMAC permit milder reaction conditions. This means that your present "develop ment equipment can be utilized because reaction temperatures and pressures are lower. Product de velopment is speeded because con struction delays are minimized. For examples DMF permits the use of milder conditions and yields that are 84% compared to 70% ob-

In full scale production proces ses, DMF and DMAC are used by vir tually every department of Du Pont and by over 100 other companies. These users cite the following advantages: (1) simple separation of the product *f rom ~~DMF "o1r~DMAC since they are water soluble; (2) easy and economic recovery of solvent because of inertness, thermal stability, and hydrolysis resist ance ; (3) increased yield. DMF and DMAC have proven their value in research. Why waste time and money trying other possibili ties when youmove into production? They are available in any amount up to tank car quantities.
