Comment ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

is on the Web! How to thank our reviewers e are sincere when we say we do not know how to thank those of you who do such an outstanding job as reviewers for ES&T. Without you, we simply could not publish a large and comprehensive journal and maintain high standards. The breadth of coverage of this journal and the depth that environmental science has now achieved make it especially necessary for us to call on you to assist us in evaluating papers that are submitted for publication. Maintaining high quality, which is beneficial to all who publish in or read this journal, is the result of a partnership between editors and reviewers. Over time, peer review is one of the gyroscopes that keep the advancement of science on course. Without it, we would be adrift, and eventually, science would cease to be a potent force in our society. With it, society can be sure that science will not be influenced by charlatans, demigods, and frauds. Along with the self-testing tradition of science, peer review gives us confidence that truth will eventually prevail. So, how to thank our reviewers who take time from busy, often hectic, schedules to sit down with a manuscript and read it critically; who resist the temptation to brush it off or to recommend acceptance without a thorough and fair analysis; who write a thoughtful, critical, and civil review; and who look carefully at methods for weaknesses and at the discussion section for errors in interpretation? Frankly, we do not know how to do so, except to say it. We know you do your job well as reviewers because you feel an obligation to your profession and do not expect a reward; still, we are all indebted to you. Thank you.
