TESTS Assay (By acid–base titrimetry). Tare a stoppered plastic flask containing about 25 mL of water, and deliver, using a plastic pipette, about 1.5 mL of sample under the water surface. Weigh accurately, wash down the sides, and dilute the solution to 50–60 mL with water. Add 0.15 mL of phenolphthalein indicator solution, and titrate with 1 N sodium hydroxide volumetric solution. One milliliter of 1 N sodium hydroxide corresponds to 0.02001 g of HF.

Chloride See test for hydrofluoric acid, [Part 4: Hydrofluoric Acid]. Use 18 mL of sample, and add it to 45 mL of water.

Phosphate See test for hydrofluoric acid, [Part 4: Hydrofluoric Acid].

Sulfate and Sulfite See test for hydrofluoric acid, [Part 4: Hydrofluoric Acid]. Use 5.0 mL (50.0 g) of sample solution A.

Mercury (By CVAAS, [Part 2: Trace and Ultratrace Elemental Analysis; Mercury Determination by CVAAS]). To each of three polyethylene 100 mL volumetric containers, add about 30 mL of water and 10.0 g of sample. Cool the samples in an icewater bath for about 15 min. Add slowly, with caution, 10 mL of ammonium hydroxide. Keeping the flasks in the ice-water bath for another 10 min, add 5 mL of nitric acid. Cool to room temperature. To the second and third flasks, add mercury ion (Hg) standards of 10 ng (1.0 ppb) and 20 ng (2.0 ppb), respectively. Dilute to the mark with water, and mix well. Zero the instrument with the blank, and determine the mercury content using a suitable mercury analyzer system (1.0 mL of 0.01 µg/mL Hg = 10 ng).

Trace Metals Determine the aluminum, barium, boron, cadmium, calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, lithium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, potassium, silicon, sodium, strontium, tin, titanium, vanadium, zinc, and zirconium by the ICP–OES Preconcentration method described in [Part 2: Trace and Ultratrace Elemental Analysis; Inductively Coupled Plasma−Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP–OES); Preconcentration of Ultratrace-Grade Reagents for Analysis by ICP–OES].
