IN 19715000 YEARS OF TRADITION BECAME ANCIENT HISTORY. Sometime around 3000 B.C., an Oriental mathematician stuck a couple of sticks together, added some beads on rods and invented the Abacus. It could perform basic mathematical functions, it was cheap to make, and it was small enough to carry around. Modern Science couldn't better it for five millennia. It wasn't exactly that people weren't trying. Take Blaise Pascal, for example. In 1642 he invented the first digital calculator to help handle his father's business accounts. Then in 1835 Charles Babbage created the analytical engine, a digital computer that was 100 years before its time. But he ran out of funds and his project fell by the wayside. Then there were Eckert and Mauchly who invented the first electronic computer in 1946. It was very sophisticated. It was also 100 feet long. And so, while the Western World became more dependent upon complicated electrical and mechanical devices, the Abacus remained the most popular calculator in the East. Until 1971. The Year of the Chip. The chip was an integrated circuit the size of a piece of confetti. On it were microphotographically engraved circuits that replaced thousands of transistors and diodes.

The key to making the chip was Silicon. It had to be free of contaminants, however, and that depended on a colorless liquid intermediate, Trichlorosilane, which in turn had to be impossibly pure. In a startling breakthrough back in 1960, a Union Carbide scientist developed the technology that enabled the production and delivery of an unheard-of 99.9999% purity. The chip made possible the mass production of pocket size calculators at reasonable costs. And by the beginning of 1976, pocket calculators were selling for as little as 15 dollars apiece. The final straw came when they started showing up where people traditionally used Abacuses. The 20th Century had finally caught up with the wooden rods and beads. Today this market's sales needs are being covered by Dan Blakemore, John Fleck, Scott Friedman, Ron Irby and Bill Neely. They, like the other bright knowledgeable people listed on the following pages, can help meet your chemical or plastics needs. And that's something you can count on.
