In Memoriam Robert E. Feeney August 30, 1913 - September 21, 2006 One of the inspirations for Bioconjugate Chemistry, prominent specialist in the chemical modification of proteins, and unmistakable personality, Bob Feeney passed away recently. We remember him as a sprightly colleague who was never, never at a loss for words. He was likely to pop up at the most unlikely times and places, deliver a few amusing remarks, and leave us all laughing. During his years as Professor of Food Science at the University of California, Davis, Feeney had a memorable style of educating younger scientists in the treatment of biological molecules with organic reagents. What was formerly an arcane and rather mysterious set of practices has evolved into rational approaches to drug design and development. Bob Feeney was a leader of that parade and enjoyed every minute of it. We all benefited from his presence. We will miss him.
