This issue of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research is dedicated to the memory of Professor Robert L.Pigford, who died August 4,1988. He served as the Editor of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Fundamentals quarterly from ita inception in 1962 through 1986 after which the three Industrial & Engineering Chemistry quarterlies were merged into the current monthly format. The papers contained in this issue were solicited from colleagues, former students, and friends of Bob Pigford. The first contribution is a tribute to him prepared by Dick Emmert, Hal Kemp, Art Metzner, and Charlie Wilke. A list of the contributions R. L.Pigford made to the literature throughout his career is printed below. To prepare this list, I solicited information from the Departments of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware and the University of California, Berkeley. This compilation was added to and corrected by many people who knew Bob well. Most of the citations were checked for accuracy. I hope this is a complete and accurate listing, but I readily apologize in advance for any omissions or errors. I would like to thank Professors Michael E. Paulaitis and Henry C. Foley for all of their efforts and emeciallv in . Dreoarine the list of authors that we invited to submit . manuscripts. The tribute which follows does an outatanding job of characterizing all of the dimensions of this meat man. I would like to add mv own Derswctive as one who has tried to follow in his editorial footsteps. As Ed& of-lndktrial & Engineering Chemistry Fundamentals. Bob Pigford set a high standard for excellence that led to a widely respected journal. It is our hope that Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research adequately continues the example he set.
