It is my sad duty to report the death of a member of our Advisory B o d ,Dr. Norbert A. J. Platzer. He was a strong advocate for our journal and for the ACS Division of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry. His loyalty and support will be missed. The following is an obituary prepared hy colleagues from the I&EC Division. Donald R. Paul Editor

In Memory of Norbert A. J. Platzer September 14, 1911-September 1, 1988 Members of the Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Division of the ACS lost a strong supporter, a tireless worker, and a dear friend when Dr. Norbert Platzer, 76, died on September 1, 1988. Dr. Platzer was an ACS member for 38 years and for the oast 22 vears had been a member of the I&EC Executive cornmiltee. He served as Treasurer of the Division and also as Chairman of the Chemical Process Subdivision. He served on the I&EC Council for 20 years. From 1978 to 1986, he was a member of the Advisory Board of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Product Research and Deuelopment and in 1987 was appointed to the Advisory Board of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. Over the past 25 years. he chaired 16 symposia a t the ACS National Meetings, and the proceedings of these were subsequently published hy the ACS in 12 books edited hy Dr. Platzer. In 1967 he was awarded the Scroll of Honor and in 1972 the Certificate of Appreciation by the I&EC Division in recognition of his many contributions to the ACS. Norbert A. J. Platzer was born in Hafslund, Norway, on September 14, 1911. He received his Ph.D. in organic

chemistry from the University of Vienna in 1936 and completed his chemical engineering studies a t Imperial College, London, in 1937. He worked a t Monsanto for 28 years in both England and the US and previously was a polymer scientist at Wacker-Chemie in Germany. He retired from Monsanto in 1976 after a distinmished - ~ ~ industrial career. In a very real Sense, however, Dr. Platzer never retired. The day following his compulsory retirement, he started the 'Digest of Polymer Developments", a publication of Springborn Laboratories, Inc., to which he devoted much of the last 12 years. It has found worldwide acceptance in the chemical industry. He married Hertha Schmid in 1943. They have three sons, Michael, with the United Nations, Stephan. a research chemist with American Hoechst, and Gregory, an architect for the United States Navy, and seven grandchildren.
