In polyester adhesives, azelaic acid gives performance comparable to sebacic acid... at half the cost. Why use sebacic acid in polyester and polyamide adhesives when Emerox®1144 Azelaic Acid (polymer grade) will give you comparable performance at nearly half the cost? For instance, with azelaic acid you g e t . . . Equivalent heat stability. Both sebacic acid and azelaic acid have the necessary thermal stability to withstand high polycondensation temperatures without degradation. Equivalent softening points. Polyesters which contain the same percentage by weight of azelaic or sebacic acid have comparable softening points as evidenced by the graph shown below. Suitable for food applications. Both acids are approved under Federal Food Additive Regulation 220

121.2520 governing polyester and polyamide adhe sives which come into contact with food. Flexibility in polyester preparation. Two poly mer intermediates, dimethyl azelate (Emery 9364A DMZ) and bis-hydroxyethyl azelate (Emery 9362A BHEZ), provide an alternate means of incorporating the C9, odd-carbon structure into polyesters. Both of the products can, increase production by simpli fying the esterification. They are also liquids which saves significantly on handling as compared to the solid acids. . . . And a substantially lower price. Currently Emerox 1144 Azelaic Acid is selling for less than half the price of sebacic acid. For this wide differen tial in price you get one extra carbon atom in sebacic acid and nothing extra-in performance. Doesn't this suggest a serious look at Emerox 1144 Azelaic Acid for your adhesives? Just use the coupon for samples and literature.
