WEB SITES EPA's Office of Science and Technology, which is located within the Office of Water, has created a new Web site to accompany the agency's review and revision of aquatic life criteria for selenium (http://www. epa.gov/ost/selenium). Among the documents available are a fact sheet overviewing the agency's rationale and process for revising the selenium criteria, a recent workshop report assessing technical issues underlying the state of the science, and links to Federal Register notices containing proposed revisions der the Great Lakes Water Quality Initiative The National Pollution Prevention Center for Higher Education (http://www.snre.umich.edu/nppc/) is a Wbb site that university instructors should explore for educational materials on pollution prevention. It contains research publications, resource lists, a directory of pollution prevention faculty, and case studies to help professors incorporate the principles of pollution prevention into courses ranging from accounting to chemical engineering to sustainable agriculture. Hosted by the University of Michigan, the site is a cooperative effort of business and industry, government nonDtofit organizations, and academia. The Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable Wbb site now includes a searchable database with cost and performance data for 140 full- and demonstration-scale case studies (http://206.181.65.143/frtr/). The database can be searched by the type of contaminant, the media it contaminates (17 categories represent air, water, and groundwater, as well as different types of soils), the primary or secondary technologies of interest, and/or the location of the site where testing took place.

Data were collected through federal cleanup projects conducted by seven agencies, mainly EPA, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Defense. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's Environmental Issues Web site (http://www.oecd.org/env/) helps answer such questions as how much it costs to protect the environment, who should pay, and what strategies and policy tools can be used to achieve environmental goals at minimal cost. Full-text documents in English and French are available on topics such as climate change, the state of the environment, environmental economics, transport, SUStainable consumption, biotechnoland pesticides.

BOOKS Biomass for Renewable Energy, Fuels, and Chemicals, D. L. Klass (Academic Press, 1998, 666 pp., $99.95) The history of biomass energy research, its development, deployment efforts, the environmental impact of biomass energy usage, its potential for replacing fossil fuels, many commercial systems already in place, and conventional and advanced biomass energy technologies are addressed. 100 Global Energy Perspectives, N. Nakicenovic; A. Griibler; A. McDonald (Cambridge University Press, 1998, 317 pp., $27.95) The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and the World Energy Council present six alternative long-term energy futures ranging from a tremendous expansion of coal production to strict limits, from a nuclear energy phaseout to a substantial increase, from carbon emissions in 2100 that are only one-third of today's levels to increases by more than a factor of 3 101

The Natural Wealth of Nations: Harnessing the Market for the Environment, D. M. Roodman (W. W. Norton, 1998, 303 pp., $13.00) The author documents how a growing number of governments have experimented with environmental fiscal reform, showing how putting a price on pollution can turn environmental protection into a profit opportunity. 102 Principles of Chemical and Biological Sensors, D. Diamond, Ed. (Wiley & Sons, 1998, 361 pp., $89.95) For researchers interested in modern sensor technology, this book offers a survey of the principles, construction, and application of the most popular types of chemical and biological sensors in use today and provides information on trends and future directions. 103 Radiotelemetry Applications for Wildlife Toxicology Field Studies, L. Brewer; K. Fagerstone, Eds. (SETAC Press, 1998, 224 pp., $40.00) The studies and discussions in this book describe advances in technology, particularly microelectronics, which have allowed wildlife biologists to monitor free-ranging animals during the course of their normal activities, thereby advancing understanding of species-specific behavior, physiology, and ecology. 104 The World's Water: The Biennial Report on Freshwater Resources,P.H. Gleick (Island Press, 1998, 319 pp., $29.95) This comprehensive reference on worldwide freshwater resources and the political, economic, scientific, and technological issues associated with them provides both detailed analysis of the most significant trends and events and the most up-to-date data available on water resources and their us.. 105 For more information on products mentioned in "Online/In Print,, use the Electronic Reader Service Cards found via ES&T's Web site.
