ONLINEINPRINT WEB SITES WINDandSEA, an index site created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Central Library (http://www.lib.noaa.gov/ docs/windandsea.html), provides links to more than 750 sites related to oceanic and atmospheric sciences. Each site is selected and briefly annotated by library staff. The page is organized according to 35 topics ranging from air pollution to wetlands; sites are arranged alphabetically within each topic. The site lacks a search engine, but the number of cites and useful annotations make it worth a visit The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) Web site (http:// jwocky.gsfc.nasa.gov) includes near real-time data from the TOMS instruments aboard Nimbus-7, Meteor-3, and Earth Probe. The site features maps of current global and polar ozone concentrations. It also includes sections on ozone basics, news, and links to related sites. The site is maintained by the Ozone Processing Team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. EPA's Envirofacts site of emissions data by company, site, or sector now includes Query Mapper, a geographical information system that generates maps of facility locations (http://www. epa. gov/ enviro / html / multisystem. html). Maps of an individual facility or a company's sites throughout a state or county can be generated. Users may include other information such as demographics, land use, land cover, roads, schools, and governmental boundaries. The European Environment Agency site (http://intwww.eea.dk/) is intended to provide the European Community with objective, reliable, and comparable environmental data so that member states can fulfill their environmental commitments. The site contains documents and

news stories about the agency's activities and includes databases on air emissions, air quality, inland waters, land cover, and nature conservation. MOLINDEX is a large database of references to literature covering environmental and occupational health topics (http: / /www..ibrary.ryerson.ca/ molndx). The database contains more than 120,000 records dating from 1975 and covers periodicals and conference proceedings published in Canada, the United States, and Britain. The database offers only bibliographical information, not full text, and there are no hot links. Searches can be based on title, keyword or author. MOLINDEX is maintained by the Rverson Polytechnic University Library Toronto International contacts in the area of sustainable product development can be found at the United Nations Environment Programme Working Group on Sustainable Product Development site (http://unep.frw. uva.nl). A searchable database includes contacts in more than 50 countries with links to e-mail and Web pages. The small database of products and services is searchable by "human need," such as transportation or clean water, and by "design approaches," such as life cycle analysis or recycled materials. The site also includes PDF versions of publications and reports

BOOKS Environmental Xenobiotics, M. Richardson, Ed. (Taylor & Francis, 1996, 526 pp., $175). This advancedlevel text, intended for environmental research scientists and managers, contains detailed information about hazards of chemical pollutants and their metabolic products, discusses various approaches that have been used to monitor them, and examines attempts made to reduce their presence in the environment. 100

Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology of Human Development, S. Kacew and G. Lambert, Eds. (Taylor & Francis, 1997, 206 pp., $89.95). Intended for toxicologists and other scientists, this graduatelevel text provides a comprehensive examination of recent developments and advances in fetal and neonatal pharmacology and environmental toxicology. 101 Laboratory Earth, Stephen H. Schneider (Basic Books, 1997, 191 pp., $20.00). A short, easy-to-read review, aimed at the nontechnical reader, this publication presents a history and concise discussion of science, technology, and policy issues surrounding the global climate change debate. 102 Mining on a Small and Medium Scale, A. Ghose, Ed. (Intermediate Technology Publications, 1997, 3036 pp., $29.95). Environmental, health and safety, and societal management issues associated with small- and medium-scale mining enterprises throughout the world and especially in developing countries are the focus of this overview text. The volume is based on the proceedings of a conference held in Calcutta India, in 1996. 103 Molecular Markers in Environmental Geochemistry, R. Eganhouse, Ed. (American Chemical Society, 1997, ACS Symposium Series No. 671, 426 pp., $129.95). Developed from a symposium on the subject, this text is organized into three sections: contemporary biogenic markers, fossil biomarkers, and anthropogenic markers. Chapters by scientists review organic geochemistry, environmental and atmospheric chemistry, microbial ecology, and marine biology. 104
