Intersectional Meeting to Celebrate Hart's Golden Anniversary

In Session a t Ithaca As t h i s is written, t h e v a n g u a r d of t h e large g r o u p of chemists who will m a k e u p t h e Sixty-eighth M e e t i n g of t h e American Chemical Society is a r r i v i n g at I t h a c a . T h e Council is in session a n d about forty-five Local Sections are represented a t the m e e t i n g by 113 Councilors. A report of the activities of t h e Council is presented in this issue and a complete report of t h e meetings of t h e Society at large a n d of t h e Divisions a n d Sections will a p p e a r in t h e S e p t e m b e r 20 n u m b e r . T h e n e w Raker L a b o r a t o r y of C h e m i s t r y is an ideal meeting place and t h e dormitories near b y furnish excellent facilities for those in a t t e n d a n c e t o m i x as well a s t o meet. A beautiful souvenir p r o g r a m , g o t t e n u p b y t h e local c o m m i t t e e a n d containing detailed a n n o u n c e m e n t s of e v e n t s connected with t h e meeting, g e n e r a l information, m a p of Cornell University C a m p u s , t r a i n schedules a n d descriptions of scenic attractions near I t h a c a , h a s a d d e d m u c h t o t h e usual service extended to visitors by local c o m m i t t e e s . The C o n v e n t i o n n u m b e r of t h e " C o r n e l l C h e m i s t , " which greets t h e visitor a t t h e registration d e s k , is p a r t i c u l a r l y well gotten u p a n d contains, besides a l u m n i news, articles by Sir R o b e r t Robertson, Prof. Ernest M e r r e t t , R. J . Lemon, a n d Prof. James S u m n e r . T h i s is a c h e m i s t r y s t u d e n t publication and t h e enterprise exhibited b y t h e editorial staff in t h e production of this n u m b e r is t o be highly commended. President Baekeland in discussing t h e m a t t e r of e n d o w ment before the Council, e m p h a s i z e d t h e need of providing a d e q u a t e l y for the future of t h e p u b l i c a t i o n s of t h e Society, He pointed out t h a t of t h e large a n n u a l e x p e n d i t u r e for p u b l i c a t i o n s , only a small a m o u n t is for salaries a n d t h a t t h e self-sacrificing efforts of a n u m b e r of t h e m e m b e r s of t h e Society m a k e s it possible to accomplish so m u c h with so little o u t l a y . He f u r t h e r s t a t e d t h a t we m u s t look i n t o t h e future a n d build for t h e g r e a t e r n e e d s of c h e m i s t r y a s t i m e goes o n . T h i s is t h e object of t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t of t h e e n d o w m e n t fund a n d with the e n l a r g e m e n t of t h e c o m m i t t e e in c h a r g e of this m a t t e r , s p e e d y progress is a n t i c i p a t e d . An interesting article entitled " T h a t Magic Stuff Called Glass," by M. K. Wisehart, appeared in t h e July number of the American Magazine T h e article consists largely of an interview with Dr. Alexander Silverman, head of the department of chemistry of the University of Pittsburgh.

The trustees and faculty of Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., have issued invitations to the celebration of Professor Edward H a r t ' s fifty years of continuous service in the department of chemistry. The celebration will include an intersectional meeting under the auspices of the Lehigh Valley, New York, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and South Jersey sections of the American Chemical Society. The celebration will open on Thursday, October 16th, and will close Saturday, October 18th. The program is as follows: THURSDAY
