“In Yeast” Wordsearch
Terry L. Helser Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, SUNY College at Oneonta, Oneonta, NY 13820-4015;
[email protected] The wordsearch puzzle below contains 31 names, terms, and acronyms that describe enzyme catalysis in a 15 ⫻ 14 letter matrix. Discover them by filling the blanks in the description below the matrix. Then, find and highlight these terms in the letter matrix. “ENZYME” is already done for you. When all are found, use the 15 letters remaining in the matrix to complete a sentence describing what enzymes do. Your success will be rewarded. Good hunting!

E N Z Y M Es are made as inactive precursors called Z _ _ _ _ _ _s. Different forms with the same activity are called I _ _ _ _ _ _s, and there are even catalytic _ _ _s called R _ _ _zymes. Enzyme C _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ lowers the A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ E _ _ _ _ _ needed to react. Increasing the S _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ concentration to S _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _, produces a maximum V _ _ _ _ _ _ _, _ _ _ _, and the related Michaelis constant, _ _. An A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ can increase the reaction R _ _ _, as in A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ R _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. An I _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ can be C _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _, if it binds to the A _ _ _ _ _ S _ _ _, or N _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. Enzymes display a pH O _ _ _ _ _ _ and denature at a specific T _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. A D _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ has either N _ _ _ or F _ _ _ 2 as a C _ _ _ _ _ _ _, made from V _ _ _ _ _ _ _ B3 and B2, while a K _ _ _ _ _ usually uses _ _ _. (How many other words of three or more letters can you find?) Use the remaining letters to fill in the following sentence: _ _ _ _ _ _ _
