2,4-Dinitrophenoxy starch might be just the building block that you need to fill that imaginative gap between good idea and great new product. It's a fine-granule modified corn starch, yellow in color, with a moisture content of 10-12%. Its pH is 5-6 (5% suspension in water). Viscosity of cooked pastes of this starch derivative will vary depending upon the type of starch treated and degree of reaction. Gelatinization temperature also varies depending upon the degree of substitution obtained.

We believe that the formula, above, represents the probable structure of the compound on the straight chain component of starch. The structure on the branched chain would be analogous. Here are a few observations on the chemistry and properties of our new protege: The simple aryl halides are very unreactive with starch . . . no observable reaction takes place under conditions that ordinarily bring about displacement reactions with the alkyl halides. However, if a nitro group M A Y 17, 1 9 6 5

or other meta-direeting group is in a position ortho- or parato the halogen atom, the reactivity is increased greatly— increased even more when nitro groups are present in the 2,4positions, reaching maximum with three nitro groups in the 2,4,6positions. These last two compounds are capable of displacement reactions with starch to form the corresponding polynitroaryl derivatives . . . the nitro groups present in this starch derivative should undergo many of the reduction reactions typical for aromatic nitro compounds . . . a striking property of polynitro aromatic compounds is their ability to form molecular complexes with other aromatic compounds . . . the intense color of many of these complexes approaches that of the dyes . . . aromatic nitro hydrocarbons are practically insoluble in water and the substituted starches have hydrophobic properties . . . 2,4-dinitrophenoxy starch strongly absorbs ultraviolet light just beyond the visible due to presence of the nitrobenzene group. If you have a possible application for 2,4-dinitrophenoxy starch please write us for more information and sample—
