T H E new pyrometer controller Model 478, offered b y the Bristol C o . , W a t e r b u r y , Conn., possesses degree-splitting charac teristics t h a t permit an unflinching check over a n y heating proc ess. Precision shear-edge action of t h e working mechanism raises t h e quality of the product to new s t a n d a r d s of uniformity.

LAMINATED

A N E W x-ray s h i e l d of B a k é l i t e laminated has b e e n d e v e l o p e d b y Joseph C . R a h & Co., Chicago, 111., using Bakélite laminated in place of other types of materials. This shield is designed for portable shock-proof x-ray equipment for industrial purposes, such as x-raying castings and joints. Bakélite laminated is used, rather t h a n other materials, because it acts as a good insulator a t t h e 75,000 volts necessary in x-ray work, a n d still remains opaque to x-ray radiation, particularly in t h e vicinity of t h e target. This new t y p e of x-ray shield c a n be produced a t less cost t h a n other t y p e s , and yet it contains all of t h e properties required in a serviceable shield. T h e shield is made b y w r a p p i n g a Bakélite laminated t u b e on a m a n d r e l and curing it hard enough t o p e r m i t X - R A T SHIELD machining. A groove is then c u t into it a n d lead foil of the proper thickness is rolled i n . T h e thickness of the lead depends upon t h e p e n e t r a t i n g powers of x-rays. Additional varnish-impregnated p a p e r is w r a p p e d on t h e t o p of t h e first one, which contains t h e lead s t r i p a n d t h e whole shield is cured properly. This Bakélite laminated tube, when tested, was opaque t o x-rays generated b y 125,000 volts a n d resisted a flashover of 130,000 volts.
