Union Carbide has put on stream its computerized ethanol plant and dena turing unit at Texas City, Tex. Facil ity, with capacity of about 100 million gallons per year, will make ethanol by direct hydration using a Union Car bide process. Company's South Charleston, W.Va., ethanol plant scheduled to close. Ferrox Iron (New York), Ltd., subsid iary of Magnetics International, Ltd., Montreal, started up continuous proc ess ferrite plant in Ogdensburg, N.Y. Plant is integrated with company's own iron oxide superconcentrate pro duction. American Cyanamid will build 700 ton-per-day sulfuric acid plant at its Warner's complex, Linden, N.J. Plant, based on Monsanto's process design, will use molten sulfur as feed stock. Leonard Construction, Chi cago, has been awarded contract for engineering, design, and erection of unit. Completion scheduled for Jan uary 1970. Badger Co., Cambridge, Mass., has been awarded contract for design, en gineering, procurement, and construc tion of 500 million pound-per-year styrene plant by Foster Grant Co., Leominster, Mass. Plant will be in Baton Rouge, La. Completion sched uled for first-half 1970.

U.S. Department of Agriculture has a contract under which polymer chem ists are evaluating more than 30 de rivatives of gum rosin and pine gum for possible use in four types of adhesives—pressure sensitive, hot melts, rubber-base mastics, and rub ber tackifiers. Research is being done at Columbus laboratories of Battelle Memorial Institute. Richardson Co. has completed acqui sition of Imperial Metal and Chemical Co., Philadelphia, Pa. (C&EN, Jan. 27, page 22). Transaction involved 75,000 shares of Richardson con vertible preferred stock, convertible into Richardson common at rate of 2V2 common shares for each. Rich
ardson is listed on New York Stock Exchange.
International Vickers-Zimmer, A.G., Frankfurt/ Main, West Germany, has signed a contract with Silk Industry Vomvix S.A., Athens to build nylon 6 spin ning plant. Vickers-Zimmer will put in engineering and facilities. Yearend capacity: 3300 metric tons. Snam Progetti, engineering and con struction division of Italy's Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi (ENI), has been awarded contract to supply Soviet Union with gas fractionating plant. Valued at $22 million, plant will proc ess more than 2.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. Lo cation: Grosni, Caucasus. BASF Canada, Ltd., Montreal, plans to build $13.5 million oxo-alcohol complex in Montreal East. Facility will have capacity of 100 million pounds of 2-ethylhexanol and n-butanol per year. General Tire & Rubber Co. of East Africa, Ltd., has been formed jointly by General Tire International and Na tional Development Corp. of Tanzania. Headquarters: Dar es Salaam. UOP Process Division, Universal Oil Products Co., has designed and li censed UOP Merox unit for Elf Min eral Oel, GmbH's Speyer, Germany, refinery. UOP has also designed and licensed combination UOP UnifiningPlatforming process unit for Com pagnie Française de Raffinage's refinery in Normandy, France, and revamped Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales' La Plata, Argentina, fresh-feed fluid catalytic cracking unit. Zinc and Lead International Service (Zalis), an international organization, has been formed to provide technical information service on uses of lead and zinc in developing areas of world. Zalis is being financed jointly by Zinc Institute and Lead Industries Association (N.Y.), Australian Lead and Zinc Development Associations, Japan Lead Zinc Development Association, and Zinc and Lead Development Associations (London).
