industry trends Sun Oil Co. will build a sulfur-recovery unit into its 50,000 barrel per day catalytic cracking plant now under construction at Toledo, Ohio. Both the cracker and the sulfur recovery unit are designed to satisfy anticipated environmental standards for plant emissions into air and water, Sun says. The cracker is scheduled to go onstream by mid-1973. Airco Alloys and Carbide has started up its $2 million baghouse filter system installed at the company's largest ferroalloys furnace at Niagara Falls. The system is designed to handle 275,000 ft3 per min of dust-laden air and is designed to operate at 99% efficiency, according to Airco's president, Theodore E . Dann. Kaiser Steel has put a $2.6 million baghouse filter unit into operation at its Fontana, Calif., plant. The baghouse is used to control emissions from the sintering operation and is believed to be the first application of its kind in the industry. Browning-Ferris Industries, Inc. (Houston, Tex.) has acquired substantially all of the assets of Community Sanitation Service, Inc., a Toledo, Ohio-based solid waste collection business. Two related companies were also acquired in the deal that cost Browning-Ferris 41,666 shares of BFI common stock.

Completion is set for December 1975. Phillips Mfg. Co. (Chicago, Ill.) has formed a new division, Phillips-Croftshaw, to fill a gap in the specialized solvent-recovery field. The new unit will provide American manufacturers with the first integrated U.S. source of engineering, fabrication, and construction of in-line solvent recovery systems. Carus Corp. has acquired a controlling interest in Milwaukee-based Limnetics, Inc., an environmental research and engineering firm. The purchase moves Carus deeper into water purification programs from a survey and management position. Pollution Control International, Inc. (Philadelphia, Pa.) has been formed to manufacture and market air pollution control devices. The first product will be a patented soot-removal system for use on industrial boilers.

Lucius Pitkin, Inc. (New York, N.Y.) has purchased a substantial interest in Nuclear Surveillance and Auditing Corp. (Rockville, Md.) . Nuclear Surveillance provides materials balance studies and a variety of other services to nuclear material handlers. Pitkin is an analytical laboratory.

Pennsylvania Power and Light (Allentown, Pa.) will install a $5.5 million baghouse filtering system to capture anthracite fly ash. The system is expected to be operational by the end of 1972.

Northeast Pollution Control Corp. (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has acquired 81 9% control of Chemical Waste Disposal, Inc. (Elizabeth, N.J.). The new subsidiary, renamed Chemical Control Corp., specializes in transporting, recycling, and disposing of ,chemical waste. Northeast designs and installs air pollution control systems.
