Brown and Caldwell (Walnut Creek, CA) is preparing a preliminary design for a 200-tpd plant for Southern California Edison to gasify refuse and use the gas to generate electricity. SCS Engineers (Covington, KY) has been retained by the Dept. of Energy (DOE) and Argonne National Laboratory to investigate methods for enhancing the production of combustible gases from sanitary landfills. Southern California Edison has requested funding from the California Public Utilities Commission to implement solar-oriented energy conservation programs, including subsidized financing of solar “backfits” for 26 000 electric water heater customers. (Atlanta, G A ) has a more than $2-million (Canadian) contract to install a proprietary wet emission control system for an elemental phosphorus plant of ERCO Industries Ltd. in Varennes, Quebec. Research-Cottrell, Inc. (Somerville, N J ) has an EPA contract for a pilotplant study of a spray dryer/fabricfilter system for dry flue-gas desulfurization (FGD). Waste products will be examined. The study is to be completed by next February.
