Inexpensive Base and Support Holder for Glass Jar The photograph shows the type of base and of support holder that we have designed to fit several glass jars rued as water brtths in the physical chemistry laboratory. The base is made of $/,-in. thick plywood, while the support holder is an aluminum ring '/,in. thick and in. wide W l with holes drilled and tapped to acoomodate support rods on which the stirrer, thermoregulator, and apparatus can be clamped. The figure shows a section of the underside of t,he support holder in. deep has been cut just the proper width to receive the rim of the where a channel about glass jar. The channel is lined with a piece of rubber cut from an inner tube from an automobile tire. With the rim in the channel, the g l a s jar is held secmely by means of three aluminum rods drilled and tapped a t both ends and attached to the haqe and support holder by 1-in. long flat head metal screws. This arrangement has several advantages; first, the possibility of breaking, chipping, or scratching the rim either hy rtttaching clamps, by accidents, or otherwise is totally eliminated; secondly, many rods can he screwed onto the support to clamp many different types of apparatns (12 on a 12-in. jar, 18 on a Win. jar); thirdly, it eliminates the need of using tripods or stands alongside the glass jar to clamp the apparatus; fourthly, it is inexpensive and easy to construct; fifthly, the assembly can be easily moved by one man with the jar empty or filled with water; sixthly, it can be adapted to glass jars of any diameter or of any shape.
