Inexpensive Chromatography An inexpensive way to equip your chemical laboratory with thin layer chromatography (TLC) developing tanks is to contact your cafeteria or n local eating establishment and ask for the institutional size relish or pickle wide-mouth glass jars. The one we use is the one-half gallon jar, having a volume of 64 oz. The approximate dimensions are: height 8%in. (21.6 cm) by 43/d in. (12.1 cm) diameter. The mouth opening is 3% in. (7.9 cm). The lid (cap) has a sealer coating that will retain the solvent in the jar when closed. The jar will accommodate plates up to 5 X 20 cm in size. An adequate liner for the jar can he made from filter paper. I find Whatman's qualitative No. 1,24 cm diameter trimmed to 24 by 16 cm satisfactory for lining the jar-tank. Another cost saving suggestion is using your empty one gallon plastic milk jugs for laboratory waste chemicals and waste solvents. Remove the old label and attach a new label or tag identifying the contents. For safety, it is recommended that the plastic jug be placed in a metal container until moved for disposal.
