Ink Holdout Improved 70% PROBLEM: Single station size called for higher ink holdout
Airco's Solution: Development of a modified PVAsize The high holdout demonstrated by the two-station VINOL-borax system, led to the demand for a one-station size that would produce similar results. Airco paper chemists came up with a modified PVA called Airco UNISIZE. PVA is modified to give controlled ge lation so that water is preferentially absorbed into the bodystock at the point of application with resultant con centration of the size at the surface. Thus, UNISIZE provides a high degree of sizing efficiency at very low coat weights. UNISIZE not only does a better job, but saves money, too. The 70% improvement quoted above is sub stantiated by a Vanceometer test on white patent liner board—liner side, comparing UNISIZE medium viscosity grade to acetylated corn starch.
