Insertion of Beryllium into a Boron-Boron Bond. The Synthesis of p[$-C y clopentadienylbery lla]octahydropentaborate, k[$-(C5H5)BeIBSH8 Sir: We report here the synthesis and structural characterization of p-[v5-(C5H5)Be]B5H8, which is an unusually good example of the very different bonding of the $-(CsHS)Be moiety to different borane groupings. In the recently reported 2-[gs(C5H5)]-2-BeB5H101the Be appears to be incorporated as a vertex in a six-atom nido framework that is structurally and electronically similar to that of the pentagonal pyramidal B6Hl0 molecule. In the title compound, however, the same q5-(C5H5)Be moiety resides in a nonvertex bridging position (1)between two adjacent basal boron atoms in a square-pyramidal framework. Other known p-(XnM)B5H8 compounds, such as p- [CI(PPh3)Cd] B5Hs2 and p- [(PPh3)2Cu] B5Hg3s4 have not been shown to form the corresponding 2-(X,)-2M B S H I O analogues, nor has the direct conversion of p- [v5-(C5H5)Be] B5H8 to 2-[v5-(CsH5)]-2-BeBsHI 0 been demonstrated as yet. The reaction of a stirred pentane slurry of 10 mmol of KB5Hg5 with excess CsHSBeC1,6 while the reaction mixture warms from -40 OC to ambient, produces high yields of p-[v5-(C5H5)Be]B5H8, which is purified by high-vacuum trap-to-trap fractionation. The compound is a colorless solid of low volatility (vp
