A chemical gradient of (3‐aminopropyl)triethoxysilane has been made on a fused silica  substrate. Additionally, high‐resolution spatially dependent evanescent‐wave cavity ring‐ down spectroscopy has been greatly improved.  These can be combined to study the  adsorption of polyoxometallates to charged substrates in a variety of environments.   These studies may be relevant for the design of more efficient fuel cells.
