Interdisciplinary Workshop on Organic Optoelectronic Materials

T

he ACS Polymer Chemistry Division is offering an interdisciplinary workshop on organic optoelectronic materials in Monterey, Calif., March 31-April 3. This is a successor to the meeting held in Virginia Beach, Va., in 1988, and the program will reflect the many changes that have occurred since then in this rapidly developing field. The workshop will feature leading academic and industrial researchers describing recent research results, focusing on the potential that organic materials have as practical optoelectronic materials. In addition to formal lectures, a poster session open to all participants will allow presentation of recent developments in optoelectronics and related fields. The workshop is designed to accommodate both experts and newcomers to the field. Because the speakers will present ample introductory material in addition to latest research results, this workshop will be an ideal forum for those seeking a comprehensive introduction to organic optoelectronic materials. Presentations by speakers from industrial labs will be particularly valu-

able for those interested in learning about potential application for these materials. To present a poster, send a title and a 200-word abstract by March 16 to Greg Baker, Bellcore, 331 Newman Springs Rd., Red Bank, N.J. 07701-7040, phone (908) 758-2932. The conference site and hotel will be the Monterey Beach Hotel, just north of Monterey, Calif. For registration and accommodation information, contact Diane M. Morrill, Business Manager, Division of Polymer Chemistry, 1103 Hahn Hall, Virginia Polytechnic Inst., Blacksburg, Va. 24061-0212, phone (703) 231-3029, fax (703) 231-8517. On-site registration will be open at 3 PM, Tuesday, March 31. A reception will be held that evening at 7, and there will be a banquet at 7 PM, April 2.

Interdisciplinary Workshop on Recent Developments in lonomers

SUNDAY AFTERNOON Overviews

An interdisciplinary workshop on recent developments in ionomers is being offered by the ACS Polymer Chemistry Division on May 10-14. It will be held at the Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, Calif. The workshop will offer an overview of recent advances on the morphology, physical and chemical properties, and applications of ionomers. In addition to formal lectures, poster sessions will stress the most recent developments in ionomers. The workshop is designed for a broad audience of workers in ionomers, including research, production, and other aspects of the field. Invited lectures, poster sessions, and informal discussions will expose the participants to the latest advances in the field and

allow them to discuss their areas of interest as well as to participate in discussion of parallel areas. The workshop will be of interest to all who work in the field as well as those who have an interest in the area or are just entering it. To present a poster, send a title and a 200-word abstract by April 10 to A. Eisenberg, Department of Chemistry, McGill University, 801 Sherbrooke St. West, Montreal, Quebec, Canada H3A 2K6, fax (514) 398-3797. For registration and accommodation information, contact Diane M. u^mniii We're the difference between pure research and applied research We don't start things, we finish them. You've been working on some concepts and they show promise. But that's as far as you can take them. Now it's time for scale up. That's where we come in. We're the facility of choice for many when it comes to process development work, such as critical synthesis in the anti-viral area. Establish an R&D partnership with Pfanstiehl. We have a lot to contribute.
