Weizrnann Institute Convocation S y m p o s i a , lectures, o p e n i n g of n e w buildings mark W e i z r n a n n a n n i v e r s a r y in Israel R E H O Y O T H , ISRAEL. - T h e new building of the department of experi mental biology at the Weizrnann Insti tute of Science was formally opened Nov. 3 on the first anniversary of the death of Chaim Weizrnann, chemist and first president of Israel. On the same occasion the cornerstone of the Institute of Physics was laid, and a number oi scientific symposia were held. Papers delivered included a dis cussion of the mechanism of carcino genesis by I. Berenblum of Rehovoth, a description of recent developments in the study of block copolymers by Her man Mark of Brooklyn Poly, and an account of the rheological properties of polyelectrolyte gels by A. Katchalsky of Rehovoth. Linus Pauling of Caltech spoke on the α-helix structure of pro tein.

In a symposium on microbiology and biochemistry Ernst E. Chain o£ Rome described the role of insulin a n d other substances in glycogen formation and S. Hestrin of Jerusalem spoke on the synthesis and degradation oF poly saccharides. Apart from the symposia, IPauling gave a lecture on a n e w a p p r o a c h to the problem of ferra magnet is xn and one on the connection L·et\veen various blood-cell diseases and structural changes in the hemoglobin molecule. Mark also lectured, with demonstra tions, on new types of syntfieti- ni troc hioro benzène- is sometimes called "an intermediate's intermediate'" because of its versatility and high reactivity in the production of many derivatives which serve as intermediates. β

Two New Plasticizers Added to Monsanto Line Two low-temperature plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride resins are now available in commercial quantity from Monsanto. The products, additions to the company's wide range of plasticizers, are E>i (2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DOA) and Di-n-octyl, n-dacyl phthalate (DNODP). DOA imparts excellent low-temperature flexibility as well as heat and light stability, and is extremely useful for controlling the viscosity of plastisols. It is recommended for use with polyvinyl chloride garden hose, film and fabric coatings. It is also effective in vinyl plastisols for toys, footwear, sponge and other products. D N O D P is recognized as the most economical quality plasticizer for obtaining good low-temperature flexibility, low volatility, good heat and light stability and water resistance. It also imparts excellent viscosity characteristics to plastisols. D N O D P is especially useful in vinyl film and sheeting for upholstery and draperies, fabric coatings and garden hose. It results in up-graded products with good flexibility and permanence and resistance to soapy and boiling water. These two products can be supplied in drums or tank cars and, where feasible, in tank truck quantities. For more information, send coupon. 68

It can be used in reduction, ammonolysis, hydrolysis, nitra tion and ether synthesis. These varied reactions make it ex tremely useful in the production of intermediates for a wide vari ety of industries. Dyes, sulfa drugs, medicinals, mildew-proofing agents and pho tographic developers are all made from intermediates pro
