not embraced by the scientific community and remained donuant until 1964 when suddenly a t least t,wo laboratories uncovered new and unequivocal evidence in favor of the "singlet oxygen" mechanism for a large group of photochemical oxidation reactions. This volume contains the papers presented s t the first international conference to be completely devoted to singlet oxygen. I t was held in New York in October, 1969, and attempted to include all the research areas in which singlet oxygen may be involved. The 25 papers are divided into 6 sections titled: I, Physical Chemistry in Solution; 11, Organic Chemistry; 111, Biological Applications; IV, Gas Phase STANLEY E.ANDERSON Studies; and V, Air Pollution and DegCollege of Wooster radation Studies. However these titles Woosler, Ohio 44691 are not a very good guide to the diverse subjects treated in the 25 contributions. An interesting feature in these proceedInternational Conference on Singlet ings is a complete and unedited record of Molecular Oxygen a n d Its Role in almost d l the comments made after the Environmental Sciences.
