Introducing ACS Applied Bio Materials ing all aspects of biomaterials and biointerfaces including and beyond the traditional biosensing, biomedical and therapeutic applications. The journal is devoted to reports of new and original experimental and theoretical research of an applied nature that integrate knowledge in the areas of materials, engineering, physics, bioscience, and chemistry into important bio applications. The journal is specifically interested in work that addresses the relationship between structure and function, and assesses the stability and degradation of materials under relevant environmental and biological conditions. Sample research topics that span the journal’s scope are inorganic, hybrid and organic materials for bio applications including antibacterial/antimicrobial and anticancer materials, biofouling and antifouling materials, biomolecular imaging/sensing materials, biomimetic materials, self-healing materials, bio-assembly materials, sustainable biomaterials, as well as novel approaches to synthesis of new and existing materials for drug delivery/targeting, photodynamic/ photothermal therapy. Descriptions of the design and development of materials and devices that enable more rapid advancement of new bio applications in areas such as bioenergy, biocatalysis, bioaerosols, bioelectronics, environment, and water safety are encouraged.” ACS Applied Bio Materials will publish six types of papers: Letters, Articles, Reviews, invited Spotlights on Applications, invited Forum Articles, and Comments. ACS Applied Bio Materials is focused on the research of new materials and existing materials with important bio applications. The concept of “applications” is critical for the journal. We also consider papers that only mention potential applications, but with high level research on the design, preparation, and characterization of new materials. In this case, the manuscript must highlight potential applications and provide a description of the potential impact of the work on applications. As a final note, for short-term goal, we plan to make great efforts to increase the reputation, readership, and impact of ACS Applied Bio Materials. For long-term goal, we hope the journal will become one of top forums worldwide for the community of chemists, physicists, biologists, engineers, and

ACS Applied Bio Materials is the third new journal within the ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces family that is focused specifically on applications focused research in the field of biomaterials. We are excited to introduce this first issue of ACS Applied Bio Materials. Biorelated materials, the focus of one of the fastest growing interdisciplinary research areas globally, have emerged at the frontier between biology and materials, engineering, physics, and chemistry. Research in this area is strongly focused on biological, biomedical, bioinspired, and biomimetic materials, in which biological assemblies, mechanisms, and functions are leveraged for development of novel synthetic materials and devices with advanced structure and function. A key aspect in the study of biorelated materials is their applications, for example, in biosensing, imaging, therapeutics, bioenergy, biocatalysis, and bioelectronics. Given these considerations and the continuing growth in the field of applications-focused research in biorelated materials, there is a clear need for new topical journals in the field. It is our intention that ACS Applied Bio Materials will serve authors and readers with the most recent breakthrough research dealing with the design of functional biorelated materials combined with their significant applications. We are further pleased to introduce the editorial team for ACS Applied Bio Materials. Prof. Shu Wang will serve as the Deputy Editor of the new journal, working together with Prof. Kirk Schanze as Editor-in-Chief. The editorial team also includes Prof. Eva Chi from the University of New Mexico, Prof. Jong Seung Kim from Korea University, and Prof. Chaoyong Yang from Xiamen University, who serve as the inaugural Associate Editors (Figure 1). The editorial team of ACS Applied Bio Materials will seek to provide authors with professional review and rapid turnaround times from submission to publication. Papers published in the journal will also receive high-quality support from ACS publications, particularly with regard to technical editing and article layout. We invite prospective authors to read the Author Guidelines, which include the journal scope: “ACS Applied Bio Materials is an interdisciplinary journal publishing original research cover-
